About[]

Flower Shop. People don't usually just wander in but come via appointment. Presumably then only people he knows buy from him as he does not provide contact details anywhere for the shop.

History[]

Created for Oliver to pursue his hobby. It seems like he isn't that concerned about doing it for finances. As he is rich and does not have his store online, and doesn't have the location of it on his business cards so it's hard to find.

Owner[]

Appearances[]

At one point it is boarded up when Oliver can't leave and no one can enter.

It's main room has cut flowers in it entirely (except for "the snake plants in the corner and the succulents on my desk"[1]) but there's a back room with live, planted plants. He has a small studio apartment above the store. There's two bedrooms but the second is so small it makes a better office/radio studio.
"The pavement outside of the Hatfield Karpos is lined with stands adorned in freshly cut blooms, some of them displayed individually, among others of their same type, others organized into gorgeous bouquets, carefully enrobed in paper bindings and fastened lovingly with ribbon.

Inside, the shop is small and likewise dripping with with florals, and the smell is absolutely divine. There were even flowers on the ceiling, tiny little pink things, absolutely blisteringly beautiful."[2]

There's a curtain of hanging flowers to get to the back room.

"In that little room, the light was entirely blue. It danced on Oliver's scars and made them shine like silver. The flowers and plants in that room were strange and marvelous shapes, and some of them seemed to be moving. Some of them swayed as though in a gentle breeze, but the air was still, hot and wet, like a rainforest, despite the chilliness of the shop we’d just walked in from. The other plants trembled and flexed, leaves furling and unfurling, all about me a quiet rustling was under cut by the faint gush of heavy running water and the chirping of distant crickets, though the room itself could have only been very small, from the size of the building the shop was in."[2]

"All of the plants he keeps in the back room of the Hatfield Karpos are in some way deadly."[3]

Trivia[]

"I did think it odd, the place being called the Hatfield Karpos, being nowhere near any Hatfield nor selling any fruit, that was until, of course, Oliver. Clearly it is named for Karpos the great beauty of Greek legend. The Hatfield part of the name I confess I still have no idea as to where it comes from. Perhaps he likes hats and fields. Or hats in fields."[2]

Seemingly based on either Hatfield, Hertfordshire or Hatfield, South Yorkshire.

"The name Hatfield stems from Old English (with a Scandinavian influence) Hæþfeld; the field or open land where heather and other shrubs grew."[4][5]

Karpos is an ancient Greek mythological figure. He is a tragic, queer figure associated with fertility and Spring.[6]
